Artist Information

William Marshall was born in St. Ives and was the first apprentice to be taken on by David Leach in 1938. He was 14 years old and came from a local school. He worked at the Leach Pottery from 1938 until 1977 and whilst there became the foreman, and teacher to many of the students that passed through.

In the latter part of Bernard Leach's career he was Leach's hands throwing many of Leach's major pieces with Leach finishing the final details of foot, rim and decoration.

In 1977 Marshall set up his own pottery in Lelant, near St. Ives, making his own distinctive pots. He was a superb thrower and is admired by many - his pots are expressive and full of vitality and life.
