Artist Information
Edgar Hubert was born in West Sussex and trained at the Slade School of Art, under Henry Tonks and Wilson Steer.
During his lifetime , particularly during the 1930s and 1940s when he showed regularly with the London Group, Hubert had work in a number of important exhibitions at galleries including the New Burlington Galleries; the Lefevre Gallery; Leicester Museum and Art Gallery; and the London Museum. The British Council aquired his work and showed it in Paris and Prague in 1948 and the Contemporary Art Society included him in a survey exhibition at the Tate in 1950. He also had solo shows at the Mayor Gallery and one at the newly formed Institute of Contemporary Art in 1958.
Edgar Hubert was a very private and self-effacing man and this facet of his character undoubtedly contributed to his fading from the limelight. He is an artist who has been garnering greater attention over recent times, with a major exhibition at the Fine Art Society in London during the Spring of 2005, after years of under appreciation.
