Clifford Fishwick was a painter and teacher, born near Accrington, Lancashire. He attended Liverpool School of Art, 1940-42, then after Naval service returned to complete his studies, 1946-7, including art teacher's diploma. Fishwick combined a busy painting career with teaching at Exeter College of Art, becoming principal, 1958-84. He was a member of the Newlyn Society from 1952-83 and exhibited at the Penwith Society in the 50's and 60's and had a solo show in 1983. He had several solo shows including works of the 1950's at Austin Desmond Fine Art in 1989. He also showed with Bruton Street Gallery and the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter jointly supported memorial exhibitions in 1998. Over the years Fishwick's style changed as certain influences took effect, the Neo-Romantics, the Cornish painters and the second school of Paris painters such as Nicholas de Stael. His later work was darker, more loosely put together and more abstract. Public galleries in Exeter, Plymouth and Bradford hold examples. Clifford Fishwick lived in Topsham, Devon.
