Artist Information

Robert Clatworthy has been a sculptor, draughtsman and teacher. He was born in Bridgwater, Somerset and studied at West of England College of Art, 1944-46, Chelsea School of Art, 1949-51 and Slade School of Fine Art, 1951-54.

Clatworthy's mother-in-law was the stage star Gertrude Lawrence, his wife Pamela, also being an actress. He went on to teach at the Royal College of Art and West of England College of Art. He was also governor of St. Martin's School of Art and Design.

He had his first exhibition at the Hanover Gallery in 1955 and he also showed at the Basil Jacob's Gallery, the Royal Academy, and Austin/Desmond Fine Art.

His major works in London are in Finsbury Avenue and Alton Housing Estate, Roehampton.

Clatworthy's early work involved Expressionistic portrayal of bulls and horses; later he moved further towards abstraction in his human heads, which can be uncompromisingly, almost brutally powerful.

The Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum hold his work. He was elected an RA in 1973.
